> HISTORICAL FACTS ABOUT SYMBOL by Kevin Schwitters

Symbol, a sculpture by Alexander Liberman, stands forty-seven feet tall with a weight of thirty tons. Its bright red color makes the symbol impossible to miss. Its abstract style adds mystery to its soft design and large scale. Top-heavy yet balanced, Symbol was designed with many loose ends in its structure. Symbol is distracting from a distance yet overwhelming up-close.

Alexander Liberman, the artist of the sculpture, explained that "red is always good in a city environment. It is the only color that really breaks away from the background." Liberman was born in Kiev Russia, in 1912. He was educated in Europe and later found work as an artist in America. His work experience included editorial positions at VOGUE Magazine and Conde Nast Publications. During the 1950's, Liberman began exhibiting his own paintings and photographs at galleries in New York City. In the early 1960s, Liberman learned the basic techniques of steel welding for large scale projects that he would soon be known for. Being an immigrant, who came to America to seek work and success, Liberman was intrigued by America's industrial scale. His intrigue resulted in many sculptures that evoked the spirit of working class America. Liberman has sculptures across the country including "Illiad", in Seattle, WA and "Abracadabra", in Hamilton, OH.
