> HISTORICAL FACTS ABOUT SYMBOL by Kevin Schwitters

As a young child, I mistook Symbol for a water slide. I could only associate the sculpture's abstract structure and bright color with recreational activities. It didn't resemble anything with a functional or serious use that I was familiar with. As I grew older, like many Rockfordians, I began to question the sculpture's purpose and validity. Aspects of Symbol's strikingly odd appearance are magnified through the views of Rockford citizens. As a city with an identity problem, Rockford is subject to a great deal of cynicism. Citizens of Rockford struggle to maintain a sense of worth in their mid-sized city. Neither living in a big city or a small town, Rockfordians rarely understand their city's merits. Rockford's Symbol is scrutinized because it represents a city that is not always aware of its own value. Although Symbol is an impressive sight, and is designed by a world famous sculptor, Rockfordians only seem to focus on its flaws. Along with the city itself, the sculpture became something to mock and celebrate. The untapped potential of Rockford overshadows many of the city's accomplishments.

As an adult, I see Symbol as an icon, but not in the way it was intended by the city or sculptor. It represents an entrance to the east side or an exit from the west side, safely north of downtown. I see Symbol as a representation of Rockford's flawed growth, awkward segregation, and self-depreciation. I have come to acknowledge the sculpture and the city's flaws with admiration. I have also learned to approach the positive qualities of Rockford and Symbol with hopeful caution. Symbol embodies the slippery potential I see in the city I grew to love.
